Better advocacy for children in care

The Children’s Commissioner for England is publishing a report that looks at how effective advocacy services are for children who are looked after.

Advocates help children put forward their views when decisions are made about their lives by the professionals looking after them. They are especially important for children who lack the ability, knowledge, confidence or maturity to express themselves.

Children’s Commissioner Anne Longfield explained:

“Children and young people in care say that good advocacy is absolutely invaluable but the quality of provision is incredibly varied. Those organisations and authorities who invest in advocacy are likely to be the ones that provide the more useful and accessible services.  I would like to see more authorities and contexts such as secure mental health units acknowledge children’s rights to advocacy and the important difference that high quality advocacy can make to their lives”
