What is an IRO?

Posted on 30 March 2016

An IRO stands for independnat reviewing officer. IRO is a special social worker who makes sure that we are looking after you properly and that any plans we make about your future are right for you.

Every looked after child will have an IRO who will work with them until they are 18. The IRO will chair your LAC review meeting and make sure you get a chance to have your say.

They should listen to how you feel, speak to you alone between review meetings and help you speak out in discussions about plans for your future.

What is your experience of the IRO?
