New college for 16-25

Posted on 09 December 2014

Alexandra the great! New college for 16 to 25 year-olds with special needs

Alexandra College is Camden’s new provision for young people aged 16 to 25 with profound, multiple or severe learning difficulties, including autism. Camden Council is developing the college with Westminster Kingsway College and the service will be run by a charity called MacIntyre, which has a good track record of working with students who have similar needs. The college is on the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate, South Hampstead.

The new college will open in September 2015 for 20 students, rising to 50 by September 2017. From spring 2016, there will also be ‘short breaks units’ available on site – where young people, who may also be students at the college, can stay for short periods of time.

The college was planned because parents told us that once their son or daughter finished school, there was little provision for them in Camden, so young people were often separated from their families. Now, we are planning a bright future for young people in their own community, which I find really motivating.

What’s great about Alexandra College is that each young person’s studies will be tailored to their needs and what they want to achieve.
