Camden longest serving foster carers

Posted on 02 June 2014

The fantastic work carried out by Camden’s longest serving foster carers was celebrated at a special awards ceremony in Camden Town on the 9th of May 2014.

In total, nine awards were presented by Bollywood dancer and actress Honey Kalaria, recognising and rewarding foster carers for their dedicated long service of between five and twenty-seven years.

The annual event which forms part of national Foster Care Fortnight, this year saw a special award presented to John Doneo MBE and Moira Doneo MBE, marking their 50 years of loyal service as foster carers.

The awards present not only a unique opportunity for Camden Council to celebrate its foster carers’ hard work, enthusiasm and commitment, but also to highlight the urgent need for more foster carers to come forward to provide vulnerable children with a sense of family and inclusion.

Honey Kalaria said:  “Looking after children takes real energy and a very warm heart. I am very impressed by the commitment and hard work of Camden foster carers and how many children and young people will have benefitted from their kindness. I am very pleased to be here to honour them with these well-deserved long service awards. These people really do go above and beyond to give vulnerable children and young people a safe and secure home, which can make such a difference to their lives.”

Tindy Agaba, a former child soldier in Rwanda, now a human rights lawyer and activist who was fostered and then adopted by actress Emma Thompson, also attended the event to talk about his fostering experience.

Tindy added: “Offering a stable home environment to a child that may not have one is an act of pure selflessness and compassion. I hope that Camden continues to find homes and carers for the borough’s children and young people, helping them gain confidence that will give them chance to get the best out of their lives.”

A Camden Council spokesperson, said;  “The annual foster carer awards allow the council to show its appreciation to the often unsung heroes of local communities. Foster carers play a vital role in helping vulnerable children in the borough live within a secure and caring environment, allowing them to go on in life and achieve their own personal goals and aspirations.”

The award ceremony also included a dinner and an animal encounter experience, kindly provided free of charge by Zachary Hollinshead from Wild Encounters.
